Objective(s) : To study, evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of IM carboprost promethamine prophylaxis with IV methyl ergometrine prophylaxis in active management of third stage of labour. Method(s) : This cross-sectional randomised comparative study was carried out in the Department of Obstet and Gynaecol, SMS Medical College, Jaipur (Raj) on 100 women in active labour. In Group I, 50 women were given intramuscular PGF2a 125 ugm and in Group II, 50 women were given IV methyl- ergometrine 0.2 nig at the time of delivery of anterior shoulder of the foetus. Main outcome measures were - duration of 3rd stage of labour, amount of blood loss and side effects of the two drugs, if any.
