From the abstract

A simple, in expensive, easy to use and reliable screening technique for mass screening of cancer cervix is a long felt need of Indian women. Over the years we have been over dependent on Pap smear which though very reliable is not an ideal screening technique for resource poor settings like India. Since the earlier screening programme based on Pap smear did not evoke the desired response, Visual inspection based screening has been successfully integrated into the mass screening programme of the Government and Chennai Corporation. Chennai Corporation initiated it in most of the zonal centre since Aug 2005.
