Objective: To study the demographic variables and sterilization techniques over the past 3 decades in a rural referral center. Methods: In this retrospective study done in the Department of OBG, KMC, Manipal, sterilization records of the past three decades were analysed using one year representative of a decade, i.e. 1986, 1996 and 2006. Couple characteristics including age, education, religion and number of children at the time of tubectomy were analysed. Changes in tubectomy methods were also studied. Results: Variables like age of the husband and wife were comparable over 3 decades. The number of illiterate women undergoing tubectomy decreased from 20% in 186 to 3.8% in 2006.
