Objective: To recognize the association of vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy (<20 wks) as an indicator of high risk pregnancy with suboptimal maternal outcome. Methods: A one year prospective study conducted in Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana included 100 patients with history of vaginal bleeding < 20 wks gestation compared to 100 controls with no history of vaginal bleeding per vaginum (age and parity matched). All patients were evaluated for maternal complications such as abortions, preterm labor, antepartum hemorrhage, placenta previa, abruption and pregnancy induced hypertension.
