Emergency peripartum hysterectomy is an indispensable part of the obstetrician's armamentarium. Even today, 8-10% of maternal mortality in developing countries directly occurs due to massive obstetrical hemorrhage. In cases of intractable obstetrical hemorrhage, emergency hysterectomy is used as a life saving procedure. This procedure is often performed under adverse conditions such as catastrophic uterine rudture or refractory, uterine atony with life threatening maternal hemorrhage.
