Objectives: To determine the effectiveness and neonatal outcome of “HANDS OFF” vs “HANDS ON” technique in preventing perineal trauma . Methods: This was a prospective randomized study, conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi, from December 2006 to May 2007. Participants included 500 expectant mothers, divided equally between "hands off" and "hands on" groups as per the inclusion criteria. As soon as crowning was seen either of two techniques was applied. Duration of second stage of labor noted for each subject. Perineum was inspected for any lacerations, simultaneously apgar score of baby was noted at 1, 5 minutes.
