From the abstract

Background: Gastrointestinal Tonometry is an important tool in this regard as an early predictor of gut ischemia and also as a guide to therapy to improve regional hemodynamics. It measures the Partial pressure of CO2 in the gastric mucosa and calculates the intramucosal pH using Henderson-Hesselbach Equation. Catecholamines and inotropes like dobutamine and amrinone have been found to have beneficial effects on regional hemodynamics of the gut and on progression of organ dysfunction.
