Surgical site infections (SSIs) continue to be a substantial source of morbidity and mortality in the surgical patient population. They are the second most common cause of nosocomial infection after UTI and account for approximately 17% of all hospital- acquired infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) term for infections associated with surgical procedures was changed from surgical wound infection to surgical site infection in 1992.
