From the abstract

While the evidence for tight glycemic control in the ambulatory setting has been well established the benefits to tight glycemic control in the Perioperative and ICU settings has been less compelling. (1) Tight glycemic control may reduce the incidence of infectious complications but it increases the risk of hypoglycemia and therefore may have risks associated with its implementation. The purpose of this talk is to review the evidence to support tight glycemic control in the ICU setting. The benefits of tight glycemic control are well shown in ambulatory diabetic patients.
