Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a common method of myocardial revascularization. Initially PCI involved dilating the narrowed coronary vessel with a balloon (balloon angioplasty), however this often resulted in acute vessel closure due to vessel recoil and spasm. This problem was solved by the introduction of coronary stents. Coronary stents have been associated with better outcome than balloon angioplasty. There are 2 major types of coronary artery stents ⎯bare metal stents (BMS) and the drug eluting stents (DES).
