From the abstract

Acharya Sushruta - The father of surgery mentioned 60 procedures for management of wound in which first 12 e.g. Aptarpan (fasting), Swedan (steam bath)Snehan (oncting), Vaman (induced emesis), Veerechan (purgation) and Basti (enema)etc. are called Poovarkarma (preoperaive/preanaesthetic measures). These procedures were applied before surgery as well anaesthesia long before thousands of years before crist. These procedures are similar to those of employed today. These are intended to bring the body to an ideal state as possible for anaesthesia. Keeping in view these texual references a clinical study was done to evaluate its utility in anaesthesia.
