The state of Punjab has registered an impressive agricultural growth during the last four decades. The food grain production has increased from 3.1 mt. in 1960- 61 to 25.3 mt. in 2007-08 that helped in ensuring food security of the country. This has been possible due to high yielding varieties of crops, higher use of fertilizers and increased irrigation especially through tube wells. The surface water resource is not sufficient to meet the total irrigation needs. The percentage irrigated area from canals and tube wells in the state is 30 and 70 per cent respectively.
