As small water bodies of villages (SWBOV) have great potential for inland aquaculture, prospects for using them in Karnataka, India, was assessed by: coining and defining a collective term for them; compiling documented information on them from government organizations and surveying them in logically-selected agro-climatic zones. It was found that though SWBOV are in vast numbers, documentation on them is lacking and they are under-utilized for aquaculture. In Karnataka, SWBOV include groundwater storage ponds, open wells, water harvesting structures like farm ponds and check dams; Gokatte, Kunte, quarry ponds and irrigation-canal-fed ponds.
