**Assistant professor, Department of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, University of Tehran, Iran ABSTRACT In this paper the efficiency of slit dams in flood control are studied in arid zones. In arid areas, floods contain very density mixtures of sediment that leads to decrease the volume of detention basins. Furthermore the efficiency of the dam is decreased for flood control. In this paper the results of experimental analysis of slit dams and general detention dams have been compared. Moreover the priority of slit detention dams to general detention dams in arid zones are discussed due to their flood control efficiencies.
