INTRODUCTION: KANPUR CITY AND CHROMIUM ‘CONNECTION’ Kanpur is the ninth most populous city in India and the second largest within the state of Uttar Pradesh after Lucknow (1). It was formerly known as the "Manchester of the East", and the economic capital of Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur is located on the banks of the river Ganga and is an important industrial centre. Kanpur city occupies a geographical area of about 278 sq. km. In the central part of U.P, lying between latitude 26o20’ and 26o35’ north and longitude 80o10’ and 80o30’ east (2), the city has considerably grown up in recent times and developed in all field of activities.
