Objectives : To analyze the cases undergoing unintended laparotomy following outpatient laparoscopic sterilization and determine whether these tomies could have been avoided or not. Methods : A retrospective study of consecutive cases of outpatient laproscopic sterllization performed, by the same surgeon, between August 2000 and July 2008, at Malda, West Bengal, was undertaken-All cases requiring unintended laparotomy, for some reason, were analyzed in depth. The reasons for these laparotornies were studied in details and the avoidable factors searched for Results: in the study period of eight years, 13 100 laparoscopic sterilizations were performed by the same surgeon, on outpatient basis.
