Recovery is an ongoing process that begins from the end of intraoperative care until the patient returns to his/her preoperative physiological state (1). This process is divided into three phases: early recovery, from the discontinuation of anaesthetic agents until recovery of protective reflexes and motor function; intermediate recovery, when the patient achieves criteria for discharge; and late recovery, when the patient returns to his/her preoperative physiological state. The success of ambulatory surgery depends, in part, on the appropriate and timely discharge of patients who have been anaesthetized.
