From the abstract

Nausea and vomiting are one of the most common complaints following anesthesia and surgery. The overall incidence of PONV during first 24 hours after surgery ranges from 20 % to 30%. This maybe greater because of the particular patient characteristics factors related to operation, anesthesia and intensity of pain and it’s management in the post operative period. None of the antiemetic like cyclizine, dexamethasone sodium phosphate ,droperidol, metochlopromide are entirely effective because thee is no single stimulus for PONV.In 1997 , the discovery of the antiemetic effects of 5 HT-3 antagonists has rekindled interest in the mechanism undergoing the nausea and emesis.
