Introduction : Maternal mortality is a harsh reality in developing countries. It is a major global concern and maternal health issue. Objectives : (a) Analyse MMR; (b) Find out etiological factors and difference between direct and indirect causes; (c) To study avoidable factors and (d) To study the steps that should be taken to reduce MMR. Methods: A retrospective analysis of maternal deaths over a period of 3 years from July 2005 to June 2008 occurring in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences, Indore was done.
