Water is a vitally important substance and its role in the evolution of life now is widely recognized. Its conservation is also emerging as a critical issue around the world. Sustainable and equitable use of water over millennium has been ensured by cultural adaptation to water availability through water conservation technologies and conservation-based life styles. Environmental protection has always been a part of Indian Culture as evidenced by the stipulated responsibilities of the State as well as Citizens for the nature and living being in the Constitutions of India under Article 48A and 51A (g).
