From the abstract

The management of postoperative pain remains an area with many unmet needs. Various guidelines for pain management and available technologies have not significantly improved patient experiences following surgery.i “Analgesic gaps” occur more commonly than thought.ii Recently approved drugs and agents-in-development may address a variety of unmet needs in postoperative pain management. Older, potentially effective technologies demonstrate a number of problems: high staff burdens, inherent technology failures, risk of medication errors, under or over-dosing, side effects and disruption to patient mobility.
