Introduction : Preventing maternal deaths remains one of the most important goals of the National Family Welfare Program. Although a significant decline in maternal deaths has been reported from the developed world, it is still a major health problem in the developing countries. Efforts for monitoring this are limited due to lack of reliable population based reporting of vital events. Objectives : To analyze the cause and the common complications leading to maternal death over a period of five years from June 2003 to June 2008. Methods : A retrospective study of hospital records and death summaries of all the maternal deaths over the five year period was carried out.
